Despite great efforts from the society to minimize the use of heavy metals by regulations and legislations the risk for exposure increases for man and environment world wide. The reasons for this is increase is the use of heavy metals in industrial processes and the global warming where toxic compounds such as heavy metals which have been accumulated and stored for thousands of years in the polar ices now returns to the water circulation cycle during a very short period of time. Heavy metals and other toxic compounds are spread in our environment by precipitation. To avoid exposure to heavy metals it is essential to control our water, soil and food to prevent exposure for humans and animals.

The general procedure for measuring of environmental toxic compounds today is that the collected samples must be transported to a laboratory for the analysis. The responses are received in best cases over night more likely within a week. This procedure makes it almost impossible to prevent an emission of a toxic compound which may have devastated impact on health if for instance the drinking water is affected.

Most of the systems available on the market are complicated to use and handle regarding operation, maintenance and calibration. They also require a lot of special training of laboratory staff. Envic-Sense’s instrument is portable and easy to operate. Staff with no previous experience and without a chemical background can easily operate the system after a few minutes of introduction. The results from the analysis are received within minutes and make it possible to respond quicker to an emission of toxic compounds from a plant that might affect the drinking water for a society.

The unique and filed for application patent for our instrument is that the whole necessary fluent system as well as a special developed pump unit and a sensor chip is located to one discardable unit with the size of a small match box. After analyse the discardable unit is replaced with a new. Thus no cleaning procedures between the analyses are required and the risk for contamination between samples is eliminated. Our instrument reduces the cost for one analysis to one third of the present cost.

Our instrument represents easy to use high-tech and possible to bring outdoors in the field for measurements directly in the environment. The product is generic and can be used for detection of practically every substance provided that we can make it fasten to our sensor. Today we can detect mercury and arsenic. A sensor for cadmium is under development (available Q4 2011) and we plan to develop sensors for other heavy metals and toxic compounds and other compounds such as explosives, narcotics, virus, DNA etc.
